Arthritis Care is the leading national voluntary organization working with and for all the people with arthritis. It aims to promote their health, well-being and independence through services, support, self-help, campaigning and information. It runs four hotels, a residential home and publishes a Bi-Monthly magaine, Arthritis News.
The local branch meets on the second Tuesdays in each month at the Free Church in St. Ives. The programme is varied and includes social and informative items. These include Quiz Nights, Beetle Drives, Pub Outings, alternative therapies, and talks by consultant rheumatologists. Outings are held during the summer months using a coach with a lift and a holiday is arranged once a year to one of the organizations hotels.
Three members of the branch form a team to present the Challenging Arthritis self-management courses. The two course leaders are both people with arthritis and a course organizer supports them. The objective is to encourage the independence of people with arthritis through self-help and personal development.
The courses run for six weeks, one two hour session per week.
The content deals with the principles of self-management and includes pain management, exercise, relaxation, diet and all aspects of living with arthritis. Courses held so far have taken place in St. Ives, Huntingdon, St. Neots, Ramsey and Cambridge.
