Town History

After the Civil War, the town went from strength to strength with vast income coming in from the huge markets. The prosperity went on and attracted the railways in the early 1800's and the big steam mill was built by the river in 1854. The town grew steadily until after 1950 and then the population exploded five fold to 15,000 persons. New houses continue to be built attracted not only by local business, the town has it's own industrial park, but also by the Cambridge Science Park some 20 miles away.

Through all of this the town has maintained it's character as I am sure you will agree and the quirky street layout only adds to the charm, it certainly keeps the traffic at bay (planners take note). We hope you enjoy your time in St. Ives either as a resident or as a visitor.

For the interested or just curious, there are a number of books available which go into the History of St. Ives in much more detail. Many of these books are obtainable from the Norris Museum.....
