For nearly 1,000 years the wide centre of St. Ives, now known as Market Hill, has hosted some of the largest public markets in England. Many years ago these markets included livestock and for a time was one of the biggest of its kind. Today the Street Markets still fill the town centre on Mondays and Fridays. On every Bank Holiday Monday however the market swells to fill almost the entire town with traders coming from all over the country to sell their wares to the thousands of people who attend under the watchful eye of Oliver Cromwell, one time resident of the town, whose statue stands in the centre of the Market Place.

St Ives is one of the four principle towns in the District of Huntingdonshire, the others being Huntingdon, St Neots (the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire), and Ramsey site of the former Abbey.

Extreme makeover website edition...

Starting in July for the whole of the last half of 2008 we're going to give the St Ives Town Web an extreme makeover. Firstly the site will have a full paint job and as we complete each page it will be converted to become an Active Server Page (.asp). This will allow us to get rid of much of the old static site and transfer everything into dynamic pages that will allow you to interact with many of the new features we will be introducing. With a bit of luck it will be all done by Christmas. We've already done the Home Page so you can see what it will look like.

But there's more, a brand new 150Mb SQL database is being built to accommodate all the information that is currently displayed on this site as static pages. This database will hold information about every commercial building, public building and public space in the town allowing all the information to be joined together with a brand new events diary. So no matter what is going on and no matter where it is going on there will be an opportunity for it to be brought to the attention of our visitors whether it's a sale or a civic ball.

This site is listed in the British Towns and Villages Encyclopaedia of Great Britain and we can be found in the entry for St Ives
