The St Ives Mosque follows a worldwide tradition of being named after one of Islam's most sacred shrines the Jamia Masjid of Srinagar which is situated in Nowhatta, in the middle of the old city. An important mosque in Srinagar, it was built by Sultan Sikandar in 1400 AD in the valley of Jammu & Kashmir. The Jamia Masjid is known as one of the sacred shrines of Islamic followers and symbolizes one of the best architectural specimen of its type.
Around the world there are numerous other mosques identified with the name Jamia Masjid, including the largest mosque in Sialkot, Pakistan. It has a capacity of 50,000. It has two small and one large minarets; the large minaret is the biggest landmark in Sialkot. Although the St Ives Mosque in Needingworth Road is not so big or is as architecturally interesting as the two mentioned above it does represent the religious centre for our local Muslim community.
