Up to 1848 Maria Rugeley and her relation the Rev. John Rugeley operated a private girls school knowns as Miss Rugeleys Young Ladies Academy, at old Slepe Hall near what is now Cromwell Place, but when the old hall was sold and dismantled in that year they built the new Slepe Hall in Ramsey Road, and moved the school to the new hall. The school continued to operate until 1965.
Upon the closure of the school Slepe Hall was converted into a hotel which opened for guests the following year. Although located in a town this is very much of the style of a country house hotel, it has its own off street parking, a restaurant, bar and a number of function rooms including the large Brunel Suite.
