This year "might be" a milestone in the history of public transport in St Ives!

Work has now started on the Meadow Lane Park and Ride Terminal for the controversial St Ives to Cambridge Guided Bus system and the first stage of the Park and Ride site should be completed by March 2009 with the first buses scheduled to commence operations in the spring of 2009. Public vehicular access to the Park and Ride site will be via Meadow Lane however the buses themselves will access the new terminal directly from Harrison Way.

Harrison Way Bus Crossing

Buses will transit from the new Park and Ride Terminus across Harrison Way into Station Road, St Ives, via a traffic-light controlled crossing with some rising bollard mechanism to stop other traffic from entering the town centre by the same route. The latest update from Cambridgeshire County Council indicates that buses will be running every 10 minutes during the day with a reduced service at night and on Sundays. It will be interesting to see what effect that the bus crossing has on the traffic situation during the morning and evening rush hours. Although buses may only need a few seconds to cross over Harrison Way we predict that there will also need to be some form of pedestrian crossing to allow people to get to and from the Park and Ride Car Park and the time that humans will take to cross the road will be of greater impact than the buses themselves.

Station Road

No doubt there will also need to be some changes to the on-street parking arrangements in Station Road to accommodate the need for double-decker buses to pass one another travelling in opposite directions simultaneously. The current parking arrangements do not allow enough space for this to occur. If anyone has any information regarding this we would be interested to hear from you?
